Most commonly, they do eat eggs and dairy. There are two types of vegetarians:

• Lacto-Oval Vegetarians: These don’t eat any flesh of animals but they eat eggs, milk products, any dish prepared with animal fats.
• Vegetarians: These don’t eat any flesh or byproducts but they still use soaps and lotion made with animal fats and collagen, wear leather and fur of animals.

Meanwhile Vegans do not consume, use, or buy any product derived from animals, including eggs, milk, honey, leather, wool, beeswax, and anything dyed red, in case it's an insect based dye. But we make it worse which happens every few thousand years anyway. Did you ever know the fact that when dinosaurs were around the Earth was on average 20 degrees warmer than it is today?

Global warming is now a fact, although it is still disputed whether it is a natural cycle or man created or something in between. It’s going to have a big effect in the next 50 years for sure. We have already heard icebergs breaking off from the Arctic and Antarctic (e.g. New Zealand is seeing icebergs for the first time in 38 years); glaciers are melting; the gulf stream is said to be slowing down; animals are moving northward; the polar bear may go extinct shortly; birds are nesting earlier; species are dying off faster (e.g. 70% of a certain variety of frogs have died because of habitat warming).

The effects are already starting and will be like a snowball rolling down a hill, as time progresses, they will become more pronounced and have more effect on our day to day lives. So yes it will have a big effect. Also global warming is not the half of it, we still have overpopulation, pollution and things like overtaxing our natural resources to contend with – look at the report that commercial fishing may collapse in the next couple of decades.

Global warming is also going to do something that you may not have thought about – Venice will be underwater entirely; New York will look like Venice and most coastal cities in the world will have a fate similar to these two cities. It won't take a hurricane to sink New Orleans which already sits below sea level. The bright side is it may eliminate some of our overpopulation problem!! Ha Ha…
scorpioweb

PLUTONIUM: The Most Dangerous of All

Nuclear power reactors produce a mixture of plutonium radio nuclides. There is no doubt that plutonium, deposited in the human lung is a powerful producer of lung cancer. Approximately five millionths of a single gram of reactor plutonium deposited in the lung will do it.

On August 6, 1945, the US government exploded a uranium bomb over Hiroshima, Japan. Over 100,000 people were killed instantly. Three days later, a plutonium bomb destroyed Nagasaki, immediately killing 70,000 people. Many thousands more have since died from the ongoing effects of radiation poisoning.

Plutonium, a by-product of nuclear fission technology is the deadliest substance ever made by humans. Because it is so toxic and can be used to make nuclear weapons plutonium-fueled reactors are an extraordinarily dangerous way to generate electricity.
All nuclear power reactors (both uranium- and plutonium-fueled) produce waste materials containing plutonium, as well as other radioactive substances that can be used to make nuclear bombs. Thus, every nation that has nuclear power is a potential nuclear weapons state.

How to make a nuclear bomb is no longer a secret. The hardest part of making a nuclear weapon is getting the plutonium. Four-fifths of the plutonium in the world today has been produced by commercial nuclear power reactors. This spread of plutonium through nuclear power has increased the number of potential nuclear weapons states to 44. The five declared nuclear weapons nations – the US, the Russia, the UK, France and China – are only one-ninth of the real "nuclear club."

Japan is acquiring one of the world's largest civilian stockpiles of plutonium by shipping its spent fuel halfway around the world to France and Britain and back for reprocessing into plutonium. Japan, therefore, has the potential to become a major nuclear weapons power in a short time. Other countries that have attempted to develop commercial Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs) – including the US, Britain, Germany and Russia – have abandoned them.

The reprocessing of used reactor fuel also creates highly radioactive wastes. Even the nuclear industry estimates that the quantity of wastes requiring long-term isolation from the environment is increased nearly ten-fold as a consequence of reprocessing.

Finally, all nuclear power reactors and places where quantities of radioactive material are stored could be as dangerous as nuclear weapon explosions. If they become the object of terrorist activity, military bombardment or sabotage, radioactive material could spread on a vast and devastating scale.
scorpioweb

CORK

Cork is a material that grows as the bark of the Cork Oak tree. More than half of the world's cork originates in Southern Portugal. The bark of the Cork Oak tree is harvested about every 9 or 10 years, and it is allowed to dry for 1 to 2 years. Next it is boiled to remove any toxins or other harmful agents, and then it is graded and cut. After a final cleaning and drying, the cork is sorted and ready for use.

Cork is most commonly used for wine bottle stoppers, but it can also be found in bulletin boards, flotation devices, and floor tiles. Worldwide cork demand is on the rise primarily due to increasing wine consumption. Ramping up cork production, however, is a lengthy process since cork trees can only be harvested about once per decade. Synthetic cork has been developed to satiate the growing demand.
scorpioweb

ASPARAGUS

Asparagus is universally popular vegetable and is one of the lily family's cultivated forms. The optimum season for fresh asparagus lasts from February through June, although available year-round in some regions. The English word "asparagus" derives from classical Latin, but the plant was once known in English as sperage, from the Medieval Latin sparagus. This term itself derives from the Greek aspharagos or asparagos, and the Greek term originates from the Persian asparag, meaning "sprout" or "shoot."

HISTORY OF ASPARAGUS

Asparagus was first cultivated 2000 years ago in the Mediterranean and Asia Minor. The Greeks and Romans loved asparagus for its flavor, texture, and medicinal qualities. Roman emperors were so fond of asparagus that they kept special boats for fetching it and called them the "Asparagus fleet". While the Greeks never seemed to garden asparagus, the Romans had specific directions on how to cultivate asparagus by 200 BC. They would eat the asparagus in season as well as preserve it for later consumption by transporting it to high altitudes where it would stay frozen. Native Americans would dry the asparagus for later medicinal uses. Asparagus has also been depicted in ancient Egyptian writings and was also grown in Syria and Spain in ancient times.

NUTRITION VALUE OF ASPARAGUS

Asparagus is one of the more nutritionally valuable vegetables. It is the best vegetable provider of folic acid. Folic acid is necessary for blood cell formation and growth, as well as liver disease prevention. Folic acid is also important for pregnant women as it aids in the prevention of neural tube defects such as spina bifida in the developing fetus. Asparagus is also very low in calories; each stalk contains fewer than 4. It contains no fat or cholesterol, and is very low in sodium. Asparagus is a great source of potassium and fiber. Finally, the plant is a source of rutin, a compound that strengthens the walls of capillaries.

POPULARITY OF ASPARAGUS

Green asparagus on sale in New York City Peru is currently the world’s leading asparagus exporter, having overtaken other important producers such as China and the United States, and has gained worldwide recognition for the quality of its product.

The top exporters in 2004 by quantity were Peru (73,038 tons), Mexico (37,211 tons), and the United States (11,818 tons), according to Global Trade Atlas and U.S. Census Bureau statistics. Only Peru’s export market share has grown each year over the last several years.

The top asparagus importers in 2004, by quantity, were the United States (92,405 tons), followed by the European Union-25 (EU-25) (external trade) (18,565 tons), and Japan (17,148 tons), according to Global Trade Atlas and U.S. Census Bureau statistics. The United States imported more than four times the amount than the EU-25, the next largest importer.

The United States production for 2005 was on 54,000 acres and yielded 90,200 tons making it the world's largest producer and consumer when import quantities are factored in. Production was concentrated in California, Michigan & Washington states.

Importers in the United States import both green fresh asparagus and white fresh asparagus from Peru. While both green and white fresh asparagus from Peru are marketed in the United States, the color requirements of the current U.S. Standards for Grades of Fresh Asparagus only provide for the grading of green asparagus.
scorpioweb

Insects in Stagnant Water

Stagnant water strictly means water that is without motion or static water, so as long as there is enough dissolved oxygen in the water to sustain aquatic life, life will go on as normal.

If there is no oxygen available however, most multi-cellular organisms cannot be able to cope. The environment is anaerobic and will sustain only bacteria that can live in this environment and other creatures (such as mosquito larva) that get their oxygen directly from the atmosphere above. Such environments are important in processes such as fossilization and in the early stages of hydrocarbon formation.

Now the fishes and small insects usually develop or breed in stagnant water. Some of the possible ways of it are as follows:

• Due to the presence of eggs of the insects.
• Due to the presence of Larvae in the water.
• Due to the droppings of birds, which may contain eggs of other insects.
• Sometimes, through the rain fall.
• Due to the cyclone in coastal areas, which pick up water and lash in ponds, with small fish and insects.
• Due to the overflowing of other water holes during rains.
• When water is drawn from flowing adjacent canal into reservoir, for purposes like irrigation, pond filling, drinking etc.
• Insects can develop and when able they fly away.
• Fish cannot survive for long in stagnant water (except aquarium fish).
scorpioweb

Sky is BLUE

The sky is blue because of the phenomenon called the ‘Tyndall effect’. This is the scattering of light, as it passes through particles in suspension. Due to its short wavelength, the elements in the atmosphere happen to scatter blue more than any other colors.

When the sun is shining down on the Earth, most of the other wavelengths or colors travel in a relatively straight line. The Sun appears white because it contains almost all the visible colors. The rest of the sky appears blue because we are seeing the blue light that has been scattered by the atmosphere.

Sunsets and the Sun during dusk appear as red and orange because there are more atmospheres for the light to travel through and more blue is deflected. Red is one of the longer wavelengths, so it is scattered the least, thereby making the Sun and sky appear redder.

The white light from the Sun is a mixture of all colors of the rainbow (i.e. VIBGYOR). This was demonstrated by Isaac Newton, who used a prism to separate the different colors and so form a spectrum. The colors of light are distinguished by their different wavelengths. The visible range of the spectrum varies from red light with a wavelength of about 720 nm, to violet with a wavelength of about 380 nm, with orange, yellow, green, blue and indigo between them. The three different types of color receptors in the retina of the human eye respond most strongly to red, green and blue wavelengths, giving us our color vision.

The first steps towards correctly explaining the color of the sky were taken by John Tyndall in 1859. He discovered that when light passes through a clear fluid holding small particles in suspension, the shorter blue wavelengths are scattered more strongly than the red. This can be demonstrated by shining a beam of white light through a tank of water with a little milk or soap mixed in it. From the side, the beam can be seen by the blue light it scatters; but the light seen directly from the end is reddened after it has passed through the tank. The scattered light can also be shown to be polarized using a filter of polarized light, just as the sky appears a deeper blue through Polaroid Sun glasses. This phenomenon is called the ‘Tyndall effect’, but it is more commonly known to physicists as ‘Rayleigh Scattering’, after Lord Rayleigh, who studied it in more detail a few years later. He showed that the amount of light scattered is inversely proportional to the fourth power of wavelength for sufficiently small particles.
scorpioweb

What is 'SIM'?

A SIM is an abbreviation for Subscriber Identity Module. Depending on what you are trying to do, e.g. program the creation of a folder called 'con', you may get an error. This is because 'con' is a reserved name for writing to an output reserved for the console, typically the operator's screen.

It is a special name in MS-DOS and Windows – one which refers to the system console. If a console application writes to the file "con", whatever is written there will appear on the screen. It is roughly equivalent to the special file in UNIX. Since it is a special file name, it already exists – and if it exists, you cannot create it – neither as a file nor as a folder. Other such special names are NUL, LPTn and COMn (where "n" is a digit). They refer to the "no device" (dev/null in UNIX), the printers and the communication ports respectively.

All these special names have little meaning nowadays when most people use GUI programs, but they still exist as a legacy and cannot be created.

As DOS users will tell you, the words CON, PRN, LPT etc. have special a meaning in DOS and are called "Reserved Words". The user is forbidden from having files or folders whose name is the same as a reserved word.

Windows is a "shell" or "program" running on top of DOS. So, you cannot have user defined objects in Windows that have the same name as a reserved word in DOS.
scorpioweb

M. Smoking is of different forms, whether it is Cigar, Cigarette, Beedi or Hookah, the result is only one thing, i.e. death. Smoking involves inhaling and absorbing various poisonous chemicals inside the body. These chemicals are highly addictive making a person consuming it habitual. The common chemicals include: nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide.

Main chemicals in smoke

• Nicotine: It is the natural constituent of Tobacco products. Nicotine has mild Pharmacological properties and also mild stimulant similar to that of Caffeine. It has the depressant effect on the Central Nervous System (CNS). Nicotine present in tobacco is addictive as cocaine and has a risk of experiencing withdrawal symptoms. It can cause a wide variety of symptoms like alertness or relaxation changes in mood and behavior and also increases blood pressure.
• Carbon monoxide: This gas is formed by burning of organic substances. And while smoking tobacco burns and emits this gas which is highly poisonous and has very slow effect of heart disease risks.
• Tar: It is the particulate matter which is extracted in the lab in the form of tiny particles from the Cigarette smoke. This is highly organic content and one of the major causes for cancer in smokers. Many Cigarette brands in the world have the composition of tar and nicotine content in their packs.

Passive smoking and the health hazard

Tobacco smoke is dangerous to non-smokers. Exposure to smoke is called Passive smoking, increases the risk of same effect as a real smoker has. Smokers and those living with smokers, have a greater risk of having fatal heart diseases and peptic ulcers. On an average, people who smoke die 5 to 8 years earlier than non-smokers. Smokers and those involved with them have all cases of lung cancer.

Health hazards due to smoking

Smoking is the major cause for emphysema, a debilitating lung disease which slowly decreases the ability of man to breathe normally. Smoking is highly dangerous for people with heart disease, blood vessel disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and the family history of these diseases. Their risk of developing throat, mouth, esophageal, pancreatic, kidney, bladder and cervical cancer is greater than non-smokers.
Smokers have the very high risk of hip, wrist and fractures of spine. It complicates the sleeping disorders.
Smoking affects the pregnant women and their unborn children more. Smoking mothers have greater chances of miscarriage and stillbirth. Children born to them have very lower birth weights on average. Children of smokers usually become smokers themselves. Fortunately, if the smoker quits smoking many risks of life decreases.

Conclusion

Overall cigarette smoking is one of the most dreadful habitual of mankind and the worlds most complex mixtures are part of the smoke. Tobacco contains thousands of different constituents (approx. 25000 have been identified so far). The complexity of cigarette smoking lies among the difficulties researchers all over the world face, in finding the right constituent that cause health hazards. So it is individual’s responsibility to take care of his health and also the people with whom he involves. So Prevention is better than Cure. So Quit smoking or say no to smoking and make the environment smoke free.
scorpioweb

SECOND SATURDAY

WHY IS SECOND SATURDAY, A HOLIDAY?

According to the book of Genesis in the Bible, the world was created in six days and the seventh day (Saturday) was a day of rest and worship. The ancient Egyptians also considered this day a day of rest and play. Saturday is the Sabbath among the Jews and the only day named after a Roman God, Saturn. In support of this historical belief, across cultures, most employers give their workers either a half day or a full holiday on this day. Saturn is the second largest planet in the Solar system and hence second Saturday is a holiday.

COMPOSITION OF MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE

Monosodium glutamate (MSG, Vetsin) is a monosodium salt (with one sodium ion) of glutamic acid. Chemically, it is HOOC-CH2-CH2-CH(NH2)-COONa. It’s widely used as a taste enhancer in place of vinegar derivatives in soups, sauces, etc. because of its pleasantly tangy taste. Recent scientific studies have shown that this salt does a lot more stimulate the taste bud. Excess consumption is known to cause a disorder called as Chinese restaurant syndrome.
scorpioweb

Cool facts

WHO CREATED THE FIRST MAP OF THE WORLD?

The Greeks are credited with putting map making on a sound mathematical footing. The earliest Greek known to have made a map of the world was Anaximander. In 6th century BC, he drew a map of the then known world, assuming that the earth was cylindrical. The first Greek to draw a world map using the assumption of a spherical earth was Eratosthenes. Ptolomey first drew maps of the world using latitudes and longitudes and conic projection. In 150 AD he produced a six-volume atlas called geographia containing several maps of the world known during his time.

WHO INVENTED THE BICYCLE?

The first bicycle was invented by Comte Mede de Sivrac of France around 1790. It was a wooden scooter-like contraption called celerifere. The modern form was developed by a French father and son team of carriage makers, Pierre and Ernst Michaux in 1860s which had metal tires instead of wooden ones. Later, these were replaced by air filled rubber tires in 1880s.

HOW DID BARBIE DOLL GET ITS NAME?

Barbie’s creator Ruth Handler named the doll after her daughter Barbara. It made its debut at the New York International American Toy Fair on March 9, 1959, which is widely celebrated as Barbie’s birthday. Handler fashioned Barbie after she noticed that her daughter quite enjoyed playing with adult-looking dolls rather than then prevalent models of dolls made to resemble infants. Her husband Elliot Handler was the co-founder of the Mattel Toy Company.

WHAT IS CREDIT CARD SKIMMING?

Skimming is the unauthorized copying of information stored on the magnetic strip of a credit card. This information is used to create a cloned card, which is then used for fraudulent transactions in retail outlets or on the internet. The stolen details can also be used for identity theft. Credit card skimming occurs when someone uses a hand-held device called a skimmer, which resembles an ATM keyboard. The credit card is swiped through the device, and the device reads the magnetic strips on your credit cards. Now the thief has the information needed to make a counterfeit card.
scorpioweb

DO YOU KNO

WHY DOES MILK OVERFLOW WHEN BOILED BUT WATER DO NOT?

Milk is not a simple liquid–it contains tiny globules of fat and casein which are not dissolved but suspended in water. On heating milk, there occurs a separation of constituents and some other elements like cream, being lighter, and float up. After sometime, a membrane-like film containing cream and casein is formed. When milk begins to boil, the heat energy is used for conversion of water into steam. As a result, the pressure below the film increases suddenly and the rising bubbles of steam makes the milk overflow. On heating water, no such film is formed and the bubbles of steam formed by boiling escape easily without resistance. Hence, water does not overflow on boiling.

WHAT IS THE MAGNETIC HILL IN LADAKH?

The Magnetic Hill is located on the Leh-Kargil-Batalik National Highway, about 30 kms from Leh, at a height of 14,000 ft above sea level. The hill supposedly has magnetic properties which attracts metallic objects, making vehicles move up at a speed of about 20 kmph with their engines off. However, many feel that it’s a mere optical illusion and nothing to do with magnetic fields, electricity or unknown forces working along mysterious lines.

ARE HOME LIZARDS POISONOUS?

The home lizard or gecko, found in most homes, is not poisonous at all. This quantifies his quality and his behavior adding to his face value. It makes an impact on the minds of other people so well, that his physical appearance and mental ability can be readily magnified. It is the power of attraction and is the art of keeping the audience on the seats. It is not born but made.
Your personality and impact you make on others depend on some major factors. The important ones are the appearance and bearing. This in turn is dependent on your dress, grooming and the cheerful facial expressions you are able to present with the genuine, warm, hearty and pleasant smile. Wishing and greeting are the major factor of any individual’s personality. You may wish the other person a happy good morning, good day or good evening. That is followed by a friendly hugging or manly handshakes. If you are wishing a person of opposite sex you might not shake hands instead in a traditional way join hands and wish with an exquisite way as “Namaskar or Namaste”.If they are old or elderly person then you can touch their feet or seek blessings from them by bowing head to them. The most innovative idea or way of greeting is from the Chinese or Japanese people, who have a very charming habit of bowing from their hips.
Verbal greeting stands to be the other face of the physical greetings. They should go hand in hand simultaneously. The first or initial impression made by the appearance is confirmed or contradicted by our voice and words. Words are the media from which the thoughts and feelings of mind conveyed to others. They should be the built-in tool for effective contact, communication and good rapport to the others. People always like to hear the wedding bells and if they help it they never want to hear the funeral chimes. A waiting and the whining voice has an instant depressing effect on others. Using the right tone and voice is an art by itself and it creates the best impression on the minds of the listeners. The celebrities on stage or in movies make full use of their voice to impress the audience by conveying their emotions and feelings.
The genuine pleasure of real liking, friendliness and interest can be relayed by the more tone of your voice. In fact your voice is the mirror of your personality. Confidence, determination, resoluteness, courage, faith, understanding, sympathy, haste and fear and personality traits of an individual can be gauged from tone of ones voice and manner of his expression.
Your voice and words will go waste if they are not channeled to provide appreciation. You musty be well mannered, considerate and thoughtful to show appreciation automatically as a matter of habit. This habit of being thoughtful and considerate towards others will change you into nicer, pleasanter and more charming personality.
scorpioweb

SURVEY ON SEXUAL AWARENESS

This is an imaginary survey on sexual awareness keeping in mind how neglected the word ‘sexuality’ is on the minds of people. This girl called, JASSI, who was just in her early eighteen was about to join the Engineering College in the city. The College is highly sophisticated with the students of all communities, caste and different behavioral pacts available there. Jassi is a very shy, demure reserved type of girl who doesn’t mingle too much with anyone in the College. Rightly she was the girl one of the many like her in the College. She just remembers her mothers’ words of advice the day before she is about to join the College: “Sit on the first bench in the class, don’t roam around in breaks and more importantly do not talk to male species in the College.”
The phrase ‘don’t talk to boys’, she would definitely remember. After all she doesn’t want to get into any type of troubles. She also had remembered her mothers first preach-ing about the menstrual cycle (Periods): “This means now you are a grown up woman and have to be careful in future. From now on if any man touches you or embraces, you will become pregnant. Be very careful about it, understood.”
We may laugh reading this phrase. Embrace and Pregnant? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha !!!!! But for many this is what had been told by their parents on the eve of puberty. Let’s face it. Sex and Sexuality is such a dumb taboo thing, even in modern India, it reeks of inten-tional misguidance. The result is not that nobody comes to know about it, but rather that we have to learn them from unreliable sources. When we can have graphic coverage of the sexual stunts in the Bill Clinton–Monika Lewinsky, Shane Warne and supermodels, on the front page of paparazzi, I really can’t fathom why can’t be sex discussed openly. Is it better for the 8–12 yr old grown ups to read about such stuff in the newspaper or to learn it from ‘Bees and Birds’ from their parents? As the old phrase told somewhere comes to my mind “If you don’t teach your children about sex, the dogs will.”
But this is not just about sex. It’s about sexuality, health, hygiene and how much we know of these things. So a group of eminent students set this uphill task of conducting this first-of-the-kind survey in the reputed College. First important task was to prepare the Questionnaire. With the help of eminent seniors or doctors help the group prepared a draft questionnaire – separate ones for males and females. This group didn’t have any intension of provocating anyone by idiotic questions asked in it. The group didn’t have any intension of expecting a girl to throw it after reading the first question with a slang “Shee!Shee!Shee!”. Why? Because the first question asked was too much for her to di-gest: “What is Menstruation?” And to the surprise this reaction was after she has been individually approached by the Lady Representative of that group and was told what the survey is about. If a female feels that something as natural as menstruation is detestable, then obviously the group felt that there was some loop hole in their guidance. This denial syndrome has only aggravated the problem, leading to adults such as Jassi, with wrapped idea of contraception and infection. One classical example the group encountered during the survey was a case when a female had answered “I don’t know” to almost all questions except one that asked for about commonly used Contraceptive methods. May be the im-pact of ads on the television was there on her mind.
Coming to the actual survey, the results were as expected – disheartening They had an average 6-8 “I don’t knows” per questionnaire, a litter higher on the girls side. Their questions were designed to test the respondent about basic health issues like spread of AIDS and the ways by which breast cancer can be detected. Most of them could answer to those questions. However the worst response was to the questions relating to the safe and fertile periods of intercourse. The males were a bit ignorant in this area.
One of the most important points kept while framing those questions was to test the misconceptions most people have in their minds. One of the most important aspects was regarding who biologically decides the sex of the child – the male or the female. This was because even in today’s era, women in India are crucified for not bearing a male child while the entire onus is on the male. Even though there is no biological fault involved, if anybody is responsible it is the male. Thankfully most of them got those answers right, but even few who didn’t answer were found distressing.
Another most common misconception they tested for was regarding the rupturing of the hymen in activities other than intercourse. This again, because many people still be-lieve that a broken hymen is a sign of virginity. Thankfully most of them were found aware of this. Further to add this they tested the males and females about the misconcep-tions of their own sex. The females were asked about wrong notions such as painful men-struation lasting for 1-2 days not being normal and not one should physically exert one-self during menstruation. Though most of them answered correct there were few who stuck on to the slang “I don’t know”.
All said and done the survey was an eye-opener. It doesn’t hope to educate you rather to initiate to get educated yourself. It is up to us to realize that there is lot to know about this Perversion is a result of suppressed information not of enlightening education. Its easy to preach the ethics of abstinence and the virtues of virginity with an AIDS brush. But the real solution lies in understanding and counseling about contraception and dis-ease. Because unless we do that we will never learn to associate sex with the thing closest to it. LOVE. Remember SEX is not the SIN. But SILENCE is……….!
scorpioweb

Vast Vistas of Vastu-Shastra

Introduction
Food, shelter and clothing are the three main basic needs of mankind. Out of these the house influences a person both physically and mentally. A house becomes more comfortable if it has been built according to principles of Vastu Shastra. It has evolved over period of time extending thousands of years. In the process of its evolution, it has been very cautiously studied to make it a perfect science, so that the person living in house built according to Vastu remains healthy and comfortable. Therefore, Vastu Shastra is the science of constructing dwellings, in other words it was the ancient name for civil engineering.

What is Vastu and why it is needed?
Vastu shastra is an important part of Jyotishya (Astrology). Ganitha (mathematical calculations), Phalita (predictions) and Samhita are the three important divisions of astrology. Vastu is part of Samhita. According to astrology, to build a house a person should have Grihanirmana Yoga (i.e. fate to construct or inherit a house). By studying anybody’s horoscope we can predict if he has that Yoga.
Various positive and negative energies are at constant play at every site. Free movement of these energies is obstructed when buildings are constructed on the plot. After thousands of years of research, our ancestors arrived at certain method so that buildings work with natural forces rather than against them. When energy fields of the structure interact with energy fields of person, good and bad results occur. A time period where negative energies were minimized and positive energies are maximized is called the Muhurta. It can be calculated using some mathematical methods whose elaborate rules dealt with ganita part of astrology. “Well begun is half done”, similarly a building work started at the right muhurta can give good results.

Principles of Vastu
Location of building:

Vastu views every building or a site as having life. This life is regarded as male form called Vastu Purusha. He is space personified. He rests in every site with his head in the North-East and legs folded in the South-West direction. The positive energy is strongest in the head i.e. North-East. If any defect or injury occurs to the person living in that site, it means same limb of Purusha is weakened by prohibited structure. Therefore, Vastu Homa should be performed to please the presiding deity of that limb.
Vastu gives detail rule in selection of site for any building. Sites with boundaries at right angles to each other i.e. rectangular and square sites are considered good for construction. Here are some important rules of choosing sites according to Vastu.
• If the plot is not square or rectangle, make it that shape by deleting some portion and fix boundaries.
• For construction of residential buildings it is advised not to choose site close to burial grounds or in the premises of temples.
• Vastu suggests the best sites are one which has edible trees, plants and creepers growing in it.
• The ground should be soft, even and should not be too hollow below.
• The land should be very fertile and abundant supply of water should be available.
• It is good to construct a house near to sea, river etc.

Location of rooms:

Vastu has elaborate rules about direction of rooms in a building. Buildings have to be built proportionately according to certain formulae. Here are some of the rules which you should follow for rooms.
• If the plot is big divide it into four quadrants.
• Never build a house in the South-East quadrant.
• It is desirable to have the same height as that of breadth for the houses.
• It is beneficial to have more openings in the north and east.
• In residential buildings the South-West direction is reserved for master bedroom.
• While sleeping you should have your head towards the South and legs towards the North.
• The kitchen should be in the South-East direction. If not, at least the gas burner should be in kept in that direction.
• The worship rooms should be in the North-East direction.
• Medicines kept in North-East direction gives miraculous healing affects to patients.
• The toilets and the Urinals should be always in the North-West direction.
• The heavy and tall trees should be in the South or West of the house.
• The flower plants should be in the North or East of the house.
• Students should sit and study facing the East or the North-East direction.
• The study room should be in the South-West direction.
• The furniture in the room should be in the South and West direction.

Conclusion

Hence, a careful study of various structural characteristics indicated in Vastu and modern engineering is required which is possible only when we fully understand and comprehend the Classical equations furnished by our ancestors. Its study and application in modern building techniques can result in enhancing the quality of material and spiritual life in today’s world. Therefore, we can bring harmony between environment and building which is highly required at this time of hour. Thus, by blending Vastu and Engineering concept, we can play a major role in making ones life peaceful and prosperous.
scorpioweb

ENDANGERED SPECIES OF INDIA

Wild life conservation is the very important concerns throughout the world. type='text'>MICROWAVE OVEN—HANDLE WITH CARE !!

The microwave oven can be a great convenience in today’s kitchen. But remember it can be dangerous if it is used unwisely. The key is to understand how it works, and exercise caution when using it.

Microwave oven produce electromagnetic radiation and the part that generates it is called MAGNETRON. This device is designed to produce electromagnetic waves that are the right wavelength required to excite water molecules. When excited, the water molecules produce heat. The radiations also pass through objects such as glass, plastic and Tupperware kept inside, to heat food. The more the amount of food to be cooked the longer it takes to cook it.

ADVANTAGES: Research indicates that microwave cooking does not result in damage to milk proteins or sugars. They cook faster and destroy few of the Vitamins from the conventional cooking methods. This is one of the very efficient devices for cooking. Any other oven expends energy in heating the vessel or any container that hold the food, whereas microwave ovens do not.

SAFETY: Electrical equipment can be hazardous if handled recklessly. The consolation is that radiation from the microwave oven itself is less harmful compared to radiation from x-ray equipment. Using technology the designers have taken care to ensure that RF exposure from a home microwave does not pose any risks as long as the safety mechanisms are in good working condition. A switch fixed to the door of the oven turns-off the system producing electromagnetic waves whenever the gadget is opened. The equipment is adequately protected from radiation leak and sealed. The oven is at least equipped with two safety switches that stop it just when the door opens. Three situations when the risk of radiation leakage increases in a microwave oven is when the seal is cracked, the oven has been dropped accidentally or fire breaks out inside the oven during cooking. The additional safety measure would be to keep a distance of four feet from the oven.

MAINTENANCE: Never turn on the empty microwave. If you should then keep a glass of water or a box of baking soda. Regularly clean the inside of the oven, the door, and the seal with a mild detergent and water.
scorpioweb

<marquee>HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF IN SUMMER</marquee>

Temperatures are rising….. it is hot. The by-product includes free neutrons, photons , gamma rays, beta particles and alpha particles.
The first successful experiment with nuclear fission was conducted in 1938 in Berlin by German Physicists. The first life sustaining nuclear chain reactionwas obtained by Enrico Fermi in 1942 and reactors based on this research were used to produce the plutonium necessary for weapon dropped on Nagasaki, Japan in August 1945.
Electricity was first generated from nuclear reactor in 1951 at the EBR-I experimental fast breeder station near Arco, Idaho. In 1954, worlds first nuclear plant was set for commercial use at Soviet grid at Obninsk, USSR. The reactor was graphite moderated, water cooled and had capacity of 5 MW.
Rising economic costs of constructing nuclear power plants and falling fossil fuel prices gradually made nuclear power less economically competitive during 80’s. The 1979 accident at Three Mile island in the US and the 1986 Chernobyl accident played a key part in stopping nuclear plant construction in the world.
The US produces the most power in the world, with 104 commercial nuclear generating units in all, which produce a total of 97,400 MW, which is approximately 20% of the nations total electric energy consumption. The US is the worlds largest supplier of commercial nuclear power.
scorpioweb

KNOW YOUR POTENTIAL

Not many of us know our true potentials. And this is what limits us from pushing envelop and achieving stupendous success. Here’s a short story which is very moral and logically true. Hope it makes you potential person on the way to success. The story goes like this :

An EAGLE laid eggs and went out to fetch some food for itself. A child playing with his friends accidentally found the eggs and got one of them home. The mother of the child was very annoyed with the child for having brought the egg home and scolded him. The mother hurriedly went out, saw that a hen had laid some eggs. She thought her chile might have picked up the egg from there and gently placed the eagle’s egg along with that of the hen’s. The hen did not see the extra egg and continued warming all eggs.

One fine day all the eggs were hatched. Amongst the chicken there was also an eaglet. It looked at all the chickens and presumed that they were his siblings. It then looked the hen and thought that she was her mother. The eaglet started observing the chickens and started imitating them. This went for a while until a man observed this strange phenomenon. He walked up to the eaglet and said, “ you are an eagle, you are suppose to fly. Why are you behaving like a chicken ? ” The eaglet replied , “ This is my world. Please leave me alone and am happy here.”

The man realised that was something wrong and help the eagle fly. So, he took the eagle to second floor of a building and said to it, “ I am going to drop you from here. Please spread your wings and fly.” The eaglet refused and requested him to let her go. But the man was very adamant and dropped it. The eagle landed on the ground with the huge thud. But it managed to escape from the man and go back to the hen.

After the few days, the man again saw the eagle. He tried motivating it by saying how its real place was high up in the skies. But the eagle would not listen. This frustrated the man. He took it to the hill top and said this is the last chance—fly or die. Suddenly, the eagle felt its wings spread on its own, due to pressure of wind. This ensured that it is now floating in the air against falling. It opened its eyes slowly and was amazed at this awesome feeling. It tried flapping into rhythm and moved up in sky where it really belonged to.

The bird was afraidto let go of its present situation and move on to what it really had even though it was heading towards direction which showed small promise. The idea of change and totally new direction scared it to death. But eventually it realized its potential and reached where it really belonged to.

So my friends if you believe you can do , you will. You need to be hungry for your dream. It takes working diligently and smartly, focusing on your goals. GOETHE once said – “ What you can do, or dream to do, begin it; boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” So, Divorce words like fear, hesitation, lack of trust and low self-belief and marry will power and attitude and be highly potential in whatever you do making mark globally.

Excerted from the Kapoor's Workshop on Effective Communication.
scorpioweb

HAIR AND THERE !!

Everyone in this world wants to be perfect in their looks and body. To be perfect the unwanted body hair has definitely been a problem area. The desire to remove excess or dark hair usually begins in adolescence. With the emphasis on smooth, hairless skin, having excess hair is a taboo, especially for women.

There are two methods of removing unwanted hair both Temporary method and Permanent method. Hormones and genetics are major factors that are accountable for the amount of hair that you have. There are several ways in which you can remove hair – DEPILATION ( removing part of the hair above the skins surface) and EPILATION ( removing the entire hair) .

Here are some of the Common methods to remove hairs :

· WAXING : It is the temporary, cheapest and most effective method of hair removal as it removes hairs from the roots. It usually takes about two to eight weeks for the hair to grow back. It often results in slower hair hair regrowth. You can opt for either hot or cold wax. Preferably one should have at least 1/8 inches of hair growth for waxing or there should
be a minimum gap of two weeks between each waxing seasons.

· SHAVING : Shaving or Trimming is a temporary method of hair removal which can be done manually or using electric shavers. Body shaving is more tender than facial shaving. Shaving needs to be done in the direction against hair growth. Lathering the body area with foam or gels prior to shaving is useful.

· TWEEZING : It is the temporary method which is sutable to the area that has less hair growth like the eyebrows. It grasps the hair shaft close to the skin removing hair from the root. It needs patience and time consuming.

· LASER TREATMENT : This is the permanent and the modern method to remove hairs. First, the skin is cleansed and unwanted hair removed. Then the Carbon based light absorbing lotion is massaged into the skin which, when passed over the skin, damages the follicle but leaves the skin unharmed. Depending upon the hair type, color and skin type the treated area is covered to prevent infection and shield it from sunlight during healing period. Laser hair removal should be done by dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon or qualified professionals only.
scorpioweb

PLEDs - THE TECHNOLOGY OF FUTURE

PLED is nothing but ‘Organic’ POLYMER LIGHT EMITTING DIODE. The researchers all over the world have already begun producing prototype displays on next generation devices which are brighter, lighter, use less power and last longer. The thickness of these PLEDs are just the thickness of paper.

This technology revolutionized in early 1990’s when they found the layer of PLED material when sandwiched between two electrodes started emitting light as a function of the electrolytic operations. Since the emitted light was from the surface it did not require any additional elements such as backlights, filters and polarisers which makes them bit lighter compared to other LCDs .

This Technology is energy efficient and would have clearer displays with viewing angles of 180 degrees. The construction is simpler , cheaper , robust display modules and faster response time allows color video pictures. PLEDs versatility could be used to create sheets of paper-thin lighting that can be applied to whole wall surfaces. So the time is not far off when TV, computer and other electronic screens will become so thin and flexible we would be even able to fold them and use them stuck to any surfaces.
scorpioweb

A Dialog between Father and Son

My son get up, the country waits for you
Destroy all your doubts
Strenghthen your will
A bright future lies in your hands.

What country father ?
I know not where I belong
I owe you for my birth
And that’s all I owe in this world.

My son, what about the Martyrs,
The sons of the soil who laid down their lives?
What about the dreams they had for you,
And for our dream motherland ?

Dreams are but, made of snow.
They melt when the sun shines
I am made only for myself
I live only for me and mine.

Is this the respect you have
For a mother so kind and loving
The entire nation looks upto you
And you make such a silly pretence.

Pardon me father, I make no pretence
Your ideas are made of patriotic stuff
Too old to make the difference
Sacrifices worthless, you have made enough

Ashamed I am of you my son
What is wealth, but selfish gains
You live on castles made up of vice
They last not long, Only goodness does

You may look down upon me, father
But please open your eyes
Have a look at this country of yours
The land of the graet, though none exist

They murder the child, for shes a girl
They burn their wives and not just widows
They force the homeless to pay rent for slums
They beat their wives and not just oxen.
Oh Father, in spite of all this, do you still look down upon me

The world may be as it is my son
But definitely you need not be so
I look down upon you forever
Till you decide otherwise.
In this scenario, interpersonal and communication skills are no more option but MANDATORY. This is global phenomenon. The overhelming majority gave a weightage to 80 : 20 in favor of Soft skills over Hard skills. One more reason why this is happening in india is technical excellance is no more a GLORY. We have 30 lakhs of graduates coming out every year and out of that around 6 lakhs are engineers or technical persons. Expecting the other 50% as Graduates tthere is no dearth for technical talent. One more factor is that education system is not current with the industry practice and anyway the organisation has to train fresh graduates in organisation specific technical skills. So the new mantra made HR professionals is ' Hire for ATTITUDE, Train for knowledge and SKILLS' . So the hbehavior skills or attitude are the yardstick for selection after ensuring the fact that basic technical skills are in place.
scorpioweb

Wonder Gizmos of Future !!

These are some of the Wonder Gizmos of near Future. The wood represents growth so always try to have indoor plants and use wood for furniture than metal.

Avoid placing stoves behind windows. Wind blows away financial oppurtunities.

The positioning of a desk contributes greatly to the succes of the job undertaken. It should always be as far as possible from the door, but have a clear views of rooms entrance.

Never use cracked plates or glasses, and dented metal cutleries a they attract stagnant energy.

A shiny front door or a polished door handle disperses the financial oppurtunities coming in, so never have any reflective item at entrance.

Gently curving staircase is preferred than straight long staircase since bend helps the energy flow smoothly.

The windowpanes and mirrors in the house should be kept clean.Dirty glass restricts positive energy flow.

Excerted from the articles of DAIVAJNA SOMAYAJI.

scorpioweb

THE GREAT WALL OF INDIA 'wah wah laaal'.

once again he proved that he is one of the most reliable batsman of india after the scintillating and disciplined win over the ramping south africans.... they broke free through the african safari in a splendid win against them in final clash at wankhede.
Only one man stood from the front leading his side in a dare devil decision winning toss and selecting fielding. and he is none other than the shy MR dependable RAHUL DRAVID.
